A drug maker, the FDA warned Wednesday that more than 30 million prescriptions were written for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The FDA said the drugs contained the same active ingredient as Cialis.
The warnings came amid an unprecedented surge in prescriptions for the drug, which is made by Eli Lilly and Company, a pharmaceutical company.
The warning comes on the heels of the Food and Drug Administration that the FDA's warnings about the safety of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, prompted by a similar drug that could also be taken by people with diabetes.
In April, a drug maker warned that Viagra and Cialis could be taken for a variety of conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease.
In the first quarter of this year, sales of the two drugs rose to more than $1 billion in the U. S. and more than 60 million prescriptions were written for the drugs.
The FDA said it would issue a "black box" warning on Wednesday.
The warnings were based on a review of a study by the U. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found the drugs increased the risk of developing heart attacks and strokes by an additional 2 to 4 percent.
Cialis, which is made by Bayer HealthCare, also has a similar risk of heart attacks and strokes but it was not included in that study.
The FDA said it would issue a black box warning on Tuesday.
The drugs are still under review by the FDA, which has been closely monitoring the numbers of patients.
The FDA said it had reviewed a similar study in 1998 and found that erectile dysfunction drugs -- such as Viagra and Cialis -- have a "more favorable safety profile" compared to the non-ED drugs.
The FDA said it was "reviewing additional safety data" to determine if there was any difference in the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The warning was based on a review of more than 3,000 patients taking the drugs and was published by the National Institute on Aging last month.
In a statement, Lilly said that the study "provides evidence that the drugs have a risk of serious cardiovascular events associated with ED, including death."
The drugs are still under review by the FDA and there are fears of a link to heart disease, which is one of the most common side effects of the drugs.Lilly said the agency is continuing to monitor the safety of the drugs.
Eli Lilly & Company said on Tuesday it is reviewing the safety information and has added a new warning. The agency has also given an update to the agency on how to advise patients about the risks and provide further information to the public.
The FDA has said it will issue a black box warning to Viagra and Cialis users at any time during the drug's FDA approval and "unless necessary," including if the drug is taken by a woman or a child. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are all FDA approved drugs.
Viagra and Cialis were approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men only. Cialis was approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in patients with heart failure in the U. in 1998. Levitra was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients with heart failure in the U. in 2003. Levitra has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of impotence.Men in the UK will soon be able to buy a number of medicines, including a new erectile dysfunction medicine, after it was revealed that a number of online pharmacies were selling it illegally.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that while the online pharmacy selling the drug contained a number of questionable websites, they were all selling it illegally.
In February last year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) found that eight of the 11 websites selling the drug contained questionable websites.
The MHRA said that while the drugs were sold in illegal pharmacies, they were selling from legitimate, regulated online pharmacies.
It added that men who buy drugs online from unverified websites may face a range of risks, including purchasing fake medicines or the wrong type of medication.
In the UK, the online pharmacy selling Viagra said that it had seen several counterfeit erectile dysfunction drugs being sold, including the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra Connect.
